' And take the Helmet of Salvation....' Ephesians 6:17
Ephesians 6:10-20 reminds us to put on the whole armour of God!
Our lives in this world involves standing strong against evil powers aligned against us, and through this passage of scripture we appreciate the need for a daily reminder to draw our strength from our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit.
Like a hat or cap, the helmet is often the last piece of the armour that is put on before combat. The helmet is vital for survival, protecting not only the head and brain but the soldier's life as a whole. If the helmet doesn't function well, the rest of the armour apparel is not fit for purpose.
As believers the Helmet of Salvation gives us assurance of our salvation and the ongoing sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit as we develop our relationship with God. 2 Corinthians 5:17 reminds us that '..anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!' Through the Word of God, the Helmet of Salvation assures us of this reality, and helps to protect our minds from thinking or believing otherwise. Our battles often stem from negative thoughts that we cultivate. The remedy for this is to pull down these strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy the obstacles that keep us from knowing God. Through reading and meditating on the Word of God our minds are protected from rebellious thoughts until they align with who we are in Christ (2 Corinthians 10:4-6).
The enemy's strategies against us often come in the form of doubt, sin, fear, distractions and complacency to name a few. As soldiers, we combat each of these with unwavering faith and trust in God's promises. Day by day, through the reading of the Word, we recognize and repent of sins that weaken our spiritual armour. We embrace God's unfailing and perfect love as we stay focused on Him amidst the noise and distractions of this world.
Philippians 4:8-9; encourages us to meditate on the things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely and of a good report. As we do this, God's peace and assurance will continue to be with us.
Having the Helmet of Salvation starts with assurance of your salvation. Seeking salvation through God's grace, comes with a decision to turn from a life of independence from God and to place your trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal Saviour. Pray for a personal encounter with Jesus and His Holy Spirit and start a lifelong journey with Jesus today:
Dear Jesus, I know I can't save myself.
I know that you have promised to save those who repent and put their faith in you alone.
I trust you to forgive my sins and give me eternal life.
Thank you for dying in my place to give me the free gift of salvation.
