The Price of Silver

The price they paid for Jesus when they nailed Him to the cross

The price of thirty pieces not of gold but not of dross

But of the dirty silver that had coursed the hands of men

Was more than just significant for this Lamb of God for sin

For silver though of value held a secondary place

To gold the greater value that adorned the Holy Place

As silver could not function as the metal used for God

But was the lesser metal in the court where people trod

The court outside the temple where the people not a few

Conducted life as usual to do as they would do

By mixing sin with righteousness through ornaments of prayer

When in their hearts the truth be known they really didn't care

That God Who pure and holy Whom their eyes could never see

Would through His Son adorn their flesh to take iniquity

Upon Himself as no one else could do what He must do

To save this sinful human race through all that He went through

For no one could be Author both of life and sacrifice

But He Who was Creator Who alone must pay the Price

If man who though unworthy would be given chance to be

One with our God and Father throughout all eternity

And no one could drink of that cup of anguish cruel and strong

Who never even in one thought had done the slightest wrong

But Him we know as Jesus Who throughout eternity

Made plan to come and die for those whom only He could see

Would be the few and faithful to the calling of the cross

Would give their all to be like Him and share at any cost

The loving grace that Calvary displayed the day He died

That day in glorious victory our mighty Saviour cried

“It Is Finished” no more can be done was meant by those last words

To prove the love of God above and draw those heavenwards

Who would in faith accept God's grace extended on that day

By Sacrifice through Jesus Christ no man could ever pay

But Him Who for the silver that would buy the potter's field

Who for our own salvation would give all that He could yield

Because of love that knew us not as worthless dross that day

But as the dearest children for which He would gladly pay

Matthew 27:1-10; John 3:16-17; Titus 2:11-15
